This translator is a really great tool. I wanted to play with it and see what the result might be if I translated a block of English text to several different languages, then back to English. I translated something I wrote and also part of a speech by Democratic Presidential Nominee Barack Obama. I translated from English to French > French to Italian > Italian to Japanese > Japanese to Spanish > Spanish to Albanian > Albanian to Dutch > Dutch to Norwegian > Norwegian to German > Then finally, German back to English.
Text from the webmaster:
My name is Fred. I live in Honolulu on the island of Oahu where I am studying the Hawaiian language. I do not surf, but I like going to the beach to frolic in the waves and look at the girls in their bikinis. Honolulu must have the most beautiful women in the world.
After several translations:
My name is Fred. I was in Honolulu, Oahu, and the language of the island of Hawaii, where they lived. I surf, but I love the beach and have fun in the waves, but we saw a girl in bikini. Honolulu, the most beautiful woman in the world.
Part of Barack Obama's speech at the 2008 Democratic National Convention:
"And so if we do not change our politics – if we do not fundamentally change the way Washington works ...
We must find a way to come together in this country – to realize that the responsibility we have to one another as Americans is greater than the pursuit of any ideological agenda or corporate bottom line."
Obama's words after several translations:
"From each according to his ability, to each according to his need"*
*Actually, this is a joke and my own interpretation, however it is seems fairly accurate.
The picture below: From the TV show Seinfeld, Kramer has an ‘ulī‘ulī
in his apartment. For those of you that do not know, an ‘ulī‘ulī is a gourd rattle, containing seeds with colored feathers at the top, used for the hula.
