The poster above shows Uncle Sam arm-in-arm with Britannia, accompanied by a eagle and an lion. It is a dramatic reminder of the long alliance between the United States and Great Britain. pelena poepoe. noun. Saloon pilot. A saloon pilot is a cracker and in Hawai‘i they are usually round (poepoe). Literally "round cracker." Here is an interesting 2003 Star-Bulletin article about the closing of the famous Hilo Macaroni Factory and it also discusses how saloon pilots were used and enjoyed. Today, Diamond Bakery seems to be the biggest supplier of saloon pilots in Hawai‘i and they have an interesting company history in Honolulu. I like the slogan of Diamond Bakery, "Making People Smile since 1921." On the picture above you can see the lettering on the truck, but it isn't legible. It reads "Diamond Bakery Co., LTD., PHONE 4279, 1753 S. KING ST., CRACKER & BREAD FACTORY". It is hard to tell, even from a larger picture, but I think the phone number is 4279. I just thought it was interesting that it was only a four digit phone number. Today there is a Zippy's restaurant at the original South King Street location and the Diamond Bakery is now located in Kalihi Kai. Also see pelena, poepoe.

peni. noun. Pen, pencil. Transliterated from the English "pen." Although peni can also mean pencil, I am more inclinded to use penikala for pencil so that there is no misunderstanding as to whether I am talking about a pen or pencil. The image above shows a pen called the "Big Kahuna" that is available from just about any promotional products company.

penikala. noun. Pencil. A combination of two words, peni + kala, that literally means "sharpening pen." Peni is transliterated from the English "pen" and kala seems to be the kala 5 in the PE dictionary which seems to be a shortened version of kākala 1 (sharp).
