Lā Kau Pua. noun. Memorial Day. Literally "day (lā) to place (kau) flowers (pua)." Memorial Day is a national holiday that commemorates all U.S. military men and women who have died while in military service and was formerly known as Decoration Day. The practice of decorating the graves of the military dead began in the North during the American Civil War. Decoration Day is a perfectly lovely name, but a some point the name of this day changed to Memorial Day.
