The U.S. Postal Service 2009 commemorative 50th anniversary statehood stamp and how the ʻokina is incorrectly depicted.
The okina is properly depicted as an upside down apostrophe. A curled apostrophe looks like a little number nine (9), so the okina looks like a little number six (6). A straight line ‘okina should have the same orientation as a forward slash ( / ), pointing roughly between 1 and 2 o'clock. And if there is a thicker or heavier end, it should be at the bottom. Read my story about how an ʻokina should look or my article about "The Weird and Wacky ‘Okina." The image below shows how the okina is incorrectly depicted on the USPS stamp. Here is a Star Bulletin story about the stamp and a story about how the "Typo on stamp sickens designer."

The Zippy's Logo
Is it just me, or has anyone else noticed a naughty image embedded in the Zippy's logo
?
Not the Z in a circle logo Zippy's circle logo that Zippy's also uses, but the logo with the word Zippy's spelled out, as shown below. The logo is artistically interesting, because the y, the apostrophe and the s are merged into one amalgamated character. It is graphically interesting in more than one way, because my immature adolescent imagination also sees the profile of a guy, leaning back on his arms to display his virile member.

As long as I'm discussing logos, what is the deal with the Marians Catering pineapple logo? Okay, so it's a pineapple, but what is that ominous symbol over the pineapple? It looks like some sort of civil defense or hazard sign. Is it a warning? Could it be possible that pineapples accidentally exposed to massive amounts of radiation, might some day roam the land? Gigantic, monstrously large radioactive pineapples seeking to devour all of mankind, finding gratification only in the sweet taste of human flesh? You can't say I didn't try to warn you!

Maneki Neko
Maneki Neko in Japanese literally means "Beckoning Cat"
This Japanese sculpture is omni-present in Hawai‘i, especially at places of business. I call it "the waving kitty", however it is actually beckoning. The Maneki Neko is suppose to bring good look. There are many stories and legends about the origin of this cat, but I like the story of the old woman the best.
Wikipedia - Maneki Neko
Text from Wikipedia about the Old Lady Legend: "An old woman living in Imado (eastern Tokyo) was forced to sell her cat due to extreme poverty. Soon afterwards the cat appeared to her in a dream. The cat told her to make its image in clay. She did as instructed, and soon afterward sold the statue. She then made more, and people bought them as well. They were so popular she soon became prosperous and wealthy."
Shaka Neko
Shaka Neko by Glenn Schot
A Hawaiian version of the Maneki Neko by artist Glenn Schot. This cat is giving the shaka instead of beckoning and it is holding a surfboard. You can find them at hawaiiart.com. He also has his own website and a page for his Shaka Nekos.
Shaka Neko comes in four colors:
White Shaka Neko is said to bring purity, all forms of luck, and good fortune.
Black Shaka Neko attracts good spirits and wards off evil.
Pink Shaka Neko is said to sooth the heart and bring love.
Gold Shaka Neko brings wealth and good fortune.

Roberts Hawaii rabbit  Roberts Hawaii rabbit
Why is the Roberts Hawaii rabbit waving?
Roberts Hawaii was started in 1941 on the island of Kaua‘i by Robert Iwamoto, Sr. as a two car cab company. In the 1960's they expanded their company to O‘ahu and other Hawaiian islands. In the 1970's, Roberts purchased a small fleet of luxary motor coaches and became direct competitors of the much larger, mainland based company Greyhound Tours whose logo was (and is) a sprinting greyhound greyhound. Robert Jr. was in Mexico watching the dog races and he noticed that the greyhounds never caught the rabbit, so Roberts Hawaii adopted a sprinting rabbit as their logo. Just that would make a good story, but it gets better. Many years later when Greyhound ceased its operations in Hawai‘i, Roberts Hawaii included the waving rabbit on the back of their coaches. The rabbit is waving "aloha" and "goodbye" to Greyhound. And now you know why the rabbit is waving!Don't take my word for it, visit their website. Today Roberts Hawaii is the largest tour and transportation company in Hawai‘i. Their story is a great American and Hawai‘i success story and they did it with a little humor.

Please "NOP ARKING"

The picture below: This is an image I took off my screen of the BBC News website back in April 2002. I really had no idea that the Hawaiian Islands were so close to Mexico. To be fair to the BBC, they did update and change the map, however Hawaiʻi still seems much too close to the North American continent. You can read the story and see the new map of Hawaii at http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/1942467.stm .

In the picture below: From the TV show Seinfeld, Kramer has an ‘ulī‘ulī uliuliin his apartment. For those of you that don't know, an ‘ulī‘ulī is a gourd rattle containing seeds with colored feathers at the top, used for the hula.

The picture below: I asked permission from the the guy with the sandwich board sign to take his picture and I gave him two dollars. His sign advertises an adult video store that is in a pedestrian alley off of Kalākaua Avenue in Waikīkī. The blueish building with coral highlights, in the upper-right corner, is the ANA Kālakaua Center at Kalākaua and Lewers. The white van on the far right is parked on Lewers Street. Circa 2006.

The picture below: This picture shows the video store that the sandwich board guy is advertising. The video store is located in a pedestrian alley on the Diamond Head side of the swanky Luxury Row development with posh shops like Tiffany, Yves Saint Laurent, Chanel, Gucci and Hugo Boss. In just a few steps, you can go from class to crass. Circa 2006.
